Founded in 1876 as a railroad and cattle ranching center, Cisco gained fame as the "Original Oil Boomtown" after the 1917 McCleskey No. 1 well discovery. Today, it blends historic charm with modern industry. The railroads continued to shape Cisco's growth, with the Texas and Pacific Railway acquiring lots in the town and selling them to immigrants. The town was marketed as the "Gate City of the West" in brochures, attracting settlers with promises of affordable fares and generous baggage allowances.
Conrad Hilton arrived in Cisco, Texas in 1919. He initially traveled to Cisco with the intention of purchasing a bank during the height of the Texas oil boom. However, when the bank deal fell through, Hilton instead purchased the 40-room Mobley Hotel, which became his first hotel and the foundation of the Hilton Hotels chain.
Cisco, Texas, is also home to a historic outdoor natatorium that was once celebrated as the world's largest concrete swimming pool. The pool was constructed in 1933 beneath the spillway of the Cisco Dam, which was completed in 1923. This expansive pool became a popular recreational site for residents and visitors alike, offering a unique swimming experience with both shallow and deep ends, a diving area, and even fish allowed into the pool for a more natural atmosphere.
